ELIZABETHANSENGLISH CIVIL WARGARDENSOriginally a bishop's palace built in the 12th century, Sherborne Old Castle became the country home of Queen Elizabeth I's favourite explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh. The castle saw fierce fighting during the English Civil War when Oliver Cromwell set out to capture it.
Today, mainly ruined, the castle and its grounds are a wildlife haven with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. There is a walk around the moat, various chapels and of course the impressive gatehouse to explore.
Sherborne Old Castle is great for all ages, but perhaps a little overwhelming for the very youngest visitors
