VICTORIANS

Kiss Me, Hardy!

Standing alone in an exposed hilltop location overlooking the Jurassic Coast, this monument in memory of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy was built in 1844 and fully restored in 2011.

Hardy was Flag Captain of HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and it was in his arms that Lord Horatio Nelson died, supposedly uttering the immortal words "Kiss me, Hardy".

Thomas Hardy was born in the village of Long Bredy nearby.
