/ Dorset Trip Activities / Nature / Beach Visit: Chesil Beach
THE SEAChesil Beach is an 18 mile long shingle barrier stretching from West Bay near Bridport all the way to Portland (just south of Weymouth) and is perhaps Dorset's most iconic landmark and one of Britain's best views.
This is no typical sandy beach - Chesil can be quite hostile and has steep banks (with occasional boardwalks for the less mobile), pebbly and with dangerous tides and currents so not great for paddling or swimming even on a fine day.
Behind the Chesil barrier is a natural salty lake, Fleet Lagoon, one of just a few remaining undisturbed brackish lagoons in the world.
Visitors to Chesil are therefore more likely to be interested in the geology of this stunning section of the Jurassic Coast, or the wildlife and habitats it supports, rather than a day by the seaside. However, due to its iconic status, it would be a shame to simply drive past without a short stop to admire the surroundings, and the Dorset Wildlife Trust's Fine Foundation Wild Chesil Centre makes a great stop. With displays about the unique wildlife and local history, or even take a boat trip!
Beach Visit: Chesil Beach is great for all ages, but perhaps a little overwhelming for the very youngest visitors
