CASTLES & DEFENCESIRON AGEROMANSSTONE AGE / NEOLITHICMaiden Castle isn't really a stereotypical castle as such - it's one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hill forts in Europe.
With huge and multiple ramparts first constructed in the 1st century BC, it would have towered over the surrounding landscape protecting hundreds of residents.
Archaeological excavations have revealed a Neolithic enclosure built around 3500 BC and a 4th century Roman temple along with a large Iron Age cemetery.
Be aware that there are sheer drops and the area is often used for livestock. The site is massive - around the size of 50 football pitches. There is no shelter and no facilities such as toilets.
Maiden Castle is best suited to older children and adults
